The 9th Asia Pacific Student Services Association Conference

 

Background

 

            The APSSA came into being in July 1988, at a meeting held in Hong Kong at the conclusion of the First Asia-Pacific Student Affairs Conference.  Its objectives are:

 

  1. To enhance liaison and cooperation among members in the development of student affairs work and student services in the Asia-Pacific region.
  2. To assist in the development of student affairs work and to strengthen its role in the development of tertiary education in the region.
  3. To promote the welfare of students in tertiary education.
  4. To enhance intercultural understanding and develop intercultural communication skills among members.

 

Eight international bi-annual conferences have been held since APSSA was established in 1988.

The conference is designed for student service practitioners, administrators, counselors, program managers, educators and policy makers:

·        Approximately 150 participants from member countries around the Asia-Pacific region

·        Approximately 200 participants from local universities, colleges, teacher’s colleges and technical colleges

·        Approximately 150 students, student leaders and representatives of educational agencies

 

Objectives

 

·        To elevate the quality of student services in the region by equipping university

                    students and staff with essential skills and knowledge that are crucial to meet

                    the changing needs of society and the challenges brought by globalization.

·        To identify strategies and actions which contribute to the enhancement of

       student’s emotional, mental, physical, and academic development.

·        To provide a platform for participants to establish greater networking in student

       services and explore possibilities for future collaborations among Asia Pacific

       institutions of higher learning.

 

Expected Outcomes

 

·        New approaches, best practices and research will be explored and shared.

·        New networks will be established while the existing ones will be strengthened.

·        Better and more efficient student services will be developed.

Call for Papers

 

            We are seeking papers which focus on our theme or one of the following plenary session sub-themes:               

                                                - Community Based Development and Social Responsibility

                                                - Professionalism Preparation for Student Affairs Practitioners

                                                - Professionalism, Ideal Graduates and Ethics

                                                - Student Activities: Effective Development

                                                - Life-long Learning

                                                - Student-centered Approach

                                                - Problem-based Learning

                                                - Roles of Student Unions and Student Leadership

 

            Papers for oral or poster presentations based on the plenary sub-themes are invited and must be submitted as extended abstracts not exceeding four pages containing Title, Name(s) of Author(s) and Address(es).

 

            The text should be divided into sections consisting of Abstract, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, and References.

 

The format and guidelines for preparation are as follows:

  1. Format: Microsoft Word format.  Times New Roman (10 points).
  2. The title should be in bold and the presenting author’s name underlined.
  3. Text: Block typed with no indentation for paragraphs.  Do not provide page numbers
  4. Spacing: Single spacing, except for between title and author’s name and between paragraphs and headings.
  5. Scientific names must be in Italics.
  6. Photographic plates/pictures are not acceptable.
  7. Abbreviations: References should be referred in the text as a number in brackets, e.g. [1], and listed under References.  References should be in alphabetical order.

     

            All abstracts in soft and hard copies are to reach the Academic Sub-Committee at

Bangkok University by April 30, 2004 together with the registration forms.  Soft copies of

the abstracts should be submitted via e-mail attachment to apssa2004@bu.ac.th  Please

prepare your abstract carefully as the APSSA Committee will not be responsible for any

editing or typographical errors.  Please also ensure that all files to be sent via e-mail are free

of virus.
